Seed Ordering 2014

Seed Ordering 2014

It’s seed catalogue time! This is the time of year we pile the table high with seed catalogues, have plenty of coffee and tea to drink and order seeds for next year’s vegetable adventures. The above picture was taken around the 8th hour of seed choosing (and we aren’t done yet!). We take buying seeds very seriously as this determines the amount and type of vegetables we grow next year.   When we are not thumbing through pretty pictures of vegetables, there is still a lot of work to be done of the farm. Building low tunnels was once such project. We covered some mustards, bok choi, spinach and kale with fabric row cover and metal hoops. Low tunnels will protect the crops inside them from some of the harsh winter weather. Cleaning vegetables is not a chore we look forward to in the winter time – but that is no longer the case! The purchase of a pressure washer has changed the way we wash carrots (and other firm veggies) for good. And there’s always a chance to be creative on the farm and build a snowman out of turnips….
