News from the Farm:

A word about eating seasonally:  Some of you may be wondering, “where are the tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, beans, etc?” The answer to this is complicated and simple at the same time.  First, the simple answer is that it is just too early in the season to have those things without using a tremendous amount of fossil fuels to heat our greenhouses. The more complicated explanation involves the idea that we are constantly experimenting with ways to extend the season both earlier and later into the year, while keeping our energy consumption to a minimum, and keeping our firewood cutting and burning to a reasonable amount.  This means that structures on our farm like the Big Greenhouse, High Tunnels, and Chinese Greenhouse, which allow us to have cucumbers and zucchini at a time when open field crops are just getting planted, are minimally heated, and we are constantly tinkering with the design, varieties we grow, and different amounts of heat. Meanwhile, we enjoy having tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant from mid-June to the first of December, and we love having carrots, lettuce, beets, and lots of other tasty cool weather crops right through the winter.

Enjoy your veggies!

Thanks, Farmer Curtis
