CSA week 11 2015

Planning for Fall: We’ve been thinking about fall. Sometimes, I confess, wishfully – dreaming of crisp, dry autumn air while picking tomatoes in ninety-five degree heat, trying to breathe air that is stuffy and nearly drinkable. Most of the time, however, we are thinking of it in terms of planning for fall CSA shares. What do we need to do now to put food in boxes later on? Although it’s hard to remember other seasons, imagine anything but Tomatoes Forever, now is the time to plan for the cooler months. We’re working through our fall seeding chart 600 kale and cabbage plants at a time, and the soil dried out enough this week to prepare large areas of ground with compost, fertilizer, and tillage so that when those transplants get big enough, the fields are ready to receive them. It’s easy to miss opportunities for field prep with unpredictable summer thunderstorms! And, even though we’ve started working for fall, the harvesting, cultivating and tending to summer crops has not slowed down one whit. We’re busy. And happy to be so.  – Cammiefall planting
